Sugar shortage in the market – Allegations from consumers

0

Consumers allege that there is a shortage of sugar in the market again.

Traders say they have stopped buying sugar as they cannot sell sugar at the government-imposed control price.

The Consumer Affairs Authority issued a gazette notification on September 02 imposing a maximum retail price of 122 rupees per kilogram of white sugar and a maximum retail price of 125 rupees per kilogram of packaged white sugar.

The maximum wholesale price of a kilogram of white sugar to be sold by the importer was 116 rupees.

It is reported that there is a shortage of sugar in the market even though those price limits are still valid.

Sugar can be seen selling in excess of the maximum retail price in many shops outside Colombo.
